Ethereum’s Layer 2 networks also experienced explosive growth, with Total Value Locked (TVL) soaring to over $51.5 billion — a staggering 205% increase from $16.6 billion in November 2023. This highlighted the critical role of L2 solutions in enhancing scalability, reducing transaction costs, and accelerating mainstream adoption.
In 2024, blockchain adoption translated into real-world impact. The global remittance market embraced blockchain for faster, more affordable cross-border payments, contributing to its projected 18% CAGR through 2032. Stablecoins also saw significant growth, with market capitalization reaching a record $168.51 billion, and Tether’s USDT dominating with $117 billion. These developments highlight blockchain’s increasing role in addressing real-world financial challenges and driving tangible change.
For us, 2024 was no less extraordinary. Amid the blockchain industry’s highs and lows, we stayed focused on innovation, community growth, and real-world impact. From migrating to Ethereum as a Layer 2 to the launch of our User Mainnet and Airdrop, it marked a pivotal chapter in our journey. Key Events That Shaped 2024
Our Historic Migration to the Ethereum Ecosystem
One of the most defining moments for us in 2024 was our migration to the Ethereum ecosystem, becoming the first Layer-1 blockchain to transition to an Ethereum Layer-2 solution. This strategic move addressed the limitations of Layer-1 blockchains, such as scalability challenges and ecosystem fragmentation, while demonstrating our commitment to a more interconnected blockchain future—one where developers can seamlessly build decentralized applications (DApps) and leverage the OP Superchain’s modular framework.
By integrating with Ethereum’s trusted infrastructure and Optimism’s OP Superchain, we’ve adopted a component based approach that delivers unparalleled advantages in scalability, interoperability, and efficiency. This transition positions us alongside leading projects like Optimism, Base, and MODE, as well as other prominent names such as Unichain by Uniswap, Soneium by Sony, and Ink by Kraken, setting the stage for a more collaborative and inclusive blockchain ecosystem.
Optimism’s OP Grant for Continued Innovation
In September, the Optimism Foundation approved our grant proposal, awarding 500,000 OP tokens to support the growth of USD and non-USD-backed stablecoins on Lisk and within the OP Superchain. This initiative aims to foster a more diverse and inclusive financial ecosystem, providing developers and users with greater stability and options within decentralized finance (DeFi).
We Launched the User Mainnet and Kicked Off the Airdrop Campaign
In 2024, we celebrated the launch of the Lisk User Mainnet, a major milestone that introduced a secure, scalable platform designed to tap into the momentum of EVM-compatible chains and purpose-driven Ethereum L2s for building decentralized applications (DApps). This launch signifies a pivotal step in our mission to create a robust ecosystem that empowers developers and users alike.
To complement the Mainnet launch, we kicked off an ambitious airdrop campaign, distributing up to 15 million LSK tokens. Designed to reward active participation and encourage exploration of Lisk’s tools and DApps, the campaign offers tasks and supertasks.
So far, more than 120K people have participated in the airdrop.

Supporting Builders: Roadshows, Hackathons, and Accelerators
Africa Roadshow
In 2024, Lisk and CV Labs embarked on a roadshow through Africa, hosting events in Cape Town, Nairobi, and Lagos to empower Web3 entrepreneurs and introduce them to the Lisk Blockchain Incubation Hub. The roadshows attracted notable figures like Oluwatobi Ajayi of IvoryPay and Oyedeji Oluwoye of Canza Finance, alongside the women-led HERDAO Kenya. Attendees explored building on Lisk’s cost-efficient Layer 2 network, and discussed challenges like smart contract auditing costs. The roadshow highlighted Lisk’s dedication to advancing blockchain adoption in Africa, paving the way for innovative startups to succeed with accessible and scalable solutions.
Hackathons
2024 was a year where we made a significant impact with hackathons. The Lisk Onchain Spring Hackathon (April 2–May 14) saw 507 builders participate, resulting in 82 project submissions and over 100 smart contracts deployed on the Lisk Sepolia testnet.
Beyond the Onchain Spring Hackathon, we extended our outreach by co-sponsoring a series of smaller events across Africa and Southeast Asia most notably ETH SEA, ETH Accra EthSafari etc. These hackathons provided opportunities for local communities to interact with blockchain, showcase their talent, and contribute to the Lisk ecosystem. From high growth markets to global hubs, we’ve consistently focused on empowering developers and driving adoption through hands-on initiatives.
Accelerator Programs
Lisk is dedicated to fostering blockchain innovation through strategic partnerships and accelerator programs. Collaborating with organizations such as AngelHack, Aya Labs, CV Labs, Web3Bridge and Key Difference Labs, we’ve established initiatives to support developers building real-world solutions in high-growth markets.
A notable initiative is the Blockchain Incubation Hub, a six-month program launched with CV Labs. This program provided mentorship, resources, and a structured curriculum to 23 startups innovating in areas like Real World Assets (RWA), Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN), Social Finance (SocialFi), and Decentralized Finance (DeFi). Among these, 7 exceptional projects advanced to receive grants, empowering them to scale their impact in sectors such as financial inclusion, climate change mitigation, and real estate tokenization.
Earlier this year, Lisk partnered with Gerakan Nasional 1000 Startup Digital, an initiative by Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Informatics Technology, to launch Ignit3—Indonesia’s first government-supported Web3 program. Backed by Angel Hack, Ignite 3 was unveiled at Coinfest Asia 2024 in Bali and aims to nurture local innovation to accelerate the Web3 startup ecosystem by providing essential resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities to aspiring entrepreneurs.
Additionally, in collaboration with Key Difference Labs, we introduced the Lisk Pioneer Program, furthering our commitment to empowering developers and entrepreneurs.
These accelerator programs and partnerships underscore Lisk’s dedication to driving blockchain adoption and fostering solutions that address real-world challenges in high growth markets.

In 2024, we expanded our ecosystem partners to more than 50, spanning a wide range of categories, including Infrastructure, DeFi, NFTs, Wallets, Bridges, and more. This diverse network of collaborations will be working with us hand in hand as we drive innovation, enhance accessibility, and deliver impactful blockchain solutions.

Coinfest:
We made waves at Coinfest Asia! From branded cups to standout swag on the beach, our talks, workshops, and side events brought the Lisk community together and highlighted the power of our ecosystem. Attendees stayed refreshed at our Airdrop Water Station, where we shared insights about Lisk.
We also celebrated the standout projects from the ETH SEA Hackathon spotlighting the Top 4 winners:

From Nairobi’s tech innovators hacking non-stop to Kilifi’s laid-back vibes under the Baobab trees, every moment underscored Africa’s pivotal role in shaping the future of blockchain.
We connected with developers, showcasing new partnerships with organizations like @KotaniPay, @yellowcard_app, @fonbnk, @Official_NODO, @CV_Labs, @Web3Bridge, @ayahq_, @fivewest_, and @circle, and supported local projects with resources for growth and scalability. Adding to the experience, we dropped an exclusive merch designed by Kenyan artist Gavin Kedo, celebrating local talent.
With these partnerships and connections, we’re committed to empowering African blockchain innovators and driving long-term success. After witnessing the talent and energy firsthand, we’re more confident than ever—Africa isn’t just joining the blockchain revolution; it’s leading it!
Devcon:
In 2024, we proudly participated in Devcon 7, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from November 12–15. Lisk, in collaboration with Optimism and Gelato, hosted EMpower: Driving Emerging Market Adoption on Ethereum. This event brought together industry leaders to discuss strategies for boosting Ethereum adoption in emerging markets. Highlights included panel discussions on the role of Layer 2 solutions, showcases of innovative projects from Southeast Asia and Africa, and a $3,000 grant awarded to a standout builder to celebrate Lisk’s User Mainnet Launch. EMpower reinforced Lisk’s commitment to supporting developers and fostering blockchain adoption in high-growth regions.

Beyond the Office: Highlights from Our Retreat
As part of the Onchain ecosystem, 2024 marked a special opportunity for Lisk, Pass App, and Onchain teams to come together for a week-long retreat in Morocco. For a remote-first company like ours, these in-person moments are invaluable for fostering connections and collaboration.
Set against the stunning backdrop of Marrakesh and the Agafay Desert, the retreat balanced work and play. Daily working sessions allowed us to refine our goals and plans for 2025, share ideas across teams, and align on our broader mission. Beyond the meetings, we connected on a personal level, explored the local culture, and strengthened relationships across the ecosystem.
This retreat wasn’t just about the work we do — it was about the people behind it. Experiences like these remind us of the importance of collaboration and shared vision as we continue building the future together.
Looking ahead to 2025
What a year it has been, both for the blockchain space and for us. In 2024, we broke new ground, forged impactful partnerships, and empowered a global community of builders to innovate across RWAs, DeFi, DePIN, and Gaming. From hosting the largest hackathon in our history to meaningful collaborations with organizations and governments, every step we took has strengthened the foundation of our ecosystem.
As we look ahead to 2025, we’re preparing for major milestones: launching fault-proof solutions in the first quarter, beginning our journey toward Superchain interoperability with its first iteration, and expanding our initiatives globally. These include launching an incubator program in South East Asia with AngelHack, expanding Web3Bridge Cohorts, and strengthening our growing presence in Argentina alongside Crecimiento — to name a few.
With Season 2 of the Lisk airdrop, a Q2 ecosystem retreat, and a focus on growing apps, TVL, and value for LSK holders, 2025 is poised to be a year of deeper engagement and stronger impact. From Africa to SEA, we’re doubling down on being on the ground and building a future that empowers communities in high growth markets.
